This recipe meets the standards of my family and tastes WAY better than the store version. I didn't realize how much better it tasted until I ate it for about a year, then went on a trip and tried the store brand. It was so bad that I literally could not eat it. I seriously took 2 bites of this oatmeal that I used to LOVE and could not eat any more because it was so disgusting. When I first tried my own version, I thought "It's okay. I guess it will do." It was nothing amazing and wasn't the most wonderful thing I had ever tasted, but when I had to go back to the original, it really hit me and I couldn't help but notice the difference.
Now I add additional flavors to the recipe by getting freeze-dried fruit and putting it through the food processor a bit so it mixes well. Sometimes, I make pre-packaged pouches with 3/4 cup of the dry mix (2 packs of the store stuff) and other times I just leave the batch in a bag and let us add whatever flavor we want that day. Mason jars are great for storing the freeze dried fruit bits.
This recipe won't be for everyone, but it sure works for my family. I hope you like it and are able to make it work for you.
